About Kathy Waites

I
spent much of my youth in Friendswood, Texas, near Johnson Space Center. My
first interest in education started when I was five years old. That's right! We
lived in the country, so I just walked to the back fence and pretended to teach
the cows at the fence. They were so very attentive! They even counted by pawing
the ground if I gave them carrots. When we moved to the city to find children
for me to play with, I collected cinder blocks for desks and started teaching
my new friends.
After graduating from high school, I married my husband, Gary, and traveled a bit while he was in the service. Later, we settled down and started a family with my son, Travis, who we lost in 1995, and my daughter, Sarah who enjoys school almost as much as I do.
My favorite interest has always been children, so naturally, their education has always been a priority. As a mother, I've found that parents have to fill in where the teacher's time and resources are limited by their class load. I've found that we can make a significant difference by working with the teachers to help them understand the children whose education we entrust to them. To accomplish that, we have to understand our own children, which is not as easy to do as it seems since they evolve before our very eyes. It is a tremendous responsibility, but the most rewarding that we shall ever have.
I have other interests that include the ocean, especially sea turtles. I think it has to do with my "mother" instincts, and the fact that they start life alone on a beach. I first learned about them when my family started diving with Randy, my webmaster. I'll add to my list of favorite topics as time permits.
I hope you find my site useful. If you know of any Internet resources that you consider important, please let me know of them. I am interested in everything from the latest scientific research to childrens games. I am also interested in special books or computer-based educational aids that are offer interesting learning environments for the children.
