Learning To Write Letters and Numbers
![]()
Some students find it difficult to write characters without assistance.
We often provide dots for them to connect to form a letter, but sometimes these
are too abstract to serve as a guide. When this occurs, the student can become
very frustrated with the process, thus making it difficult to develop the
eye-hand coordination that is pre-requisite for writing. To keep the student
excited about learning to write, it is necessary that we provide exercises that
expand the student's skills without losing their motivation. I've found that
children really like writing their letters using "hollow" letters like these as
guides. Templates for these letters are available at most hardware stores in
the paint department. You can draw a few pages of words, and ask the child to
draw the letters inside the guides. Give it a try, and let me know how it works
for you.

I hope that you have found my idea interesting. I am always looking for additional methods, information and resources that are useful in education, so if you know of any that I don't have links to, let me know about them. If you have a helpful tip that you would like to share, but don't have a web site, send it to me, and if I publish it, I'll include your e-mail address with it so you can get feedback. Have a great day!
